Former Montana Grizzly Tryone Holmes signs with Miami Dolphins

MIAMI, Fla. — The AAF couldn’t make it through its first season, but the now defunct football league did give many players another chance to show what they can do, including one former Montana Grizzly. A brief stop helped Tyrone Holmes land another gig in the NFL.

Holmes signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins, one of several AAF players to join Miami recently. The linebacker gets another shot in the NFL. He was drafted by Jacksonville in the sixth round in 2016 and also spent time on rosters and practice squads in Cleveland, Kansas City and Los Angeles. The AAF gave him another chance on the field with the San Antonio Commanders, until the AAF ceased operations last week.

Holmes starred at defensive end at Montana. The Eagle Point, Oregon native won the Buck Buchanan Award as the FCS defensive player of the year with the Grizzlies in 2015. He piled up 18 sacks and 24 tackles-for-loss as a senior.

Now three former Montana players are currently signed for the 2019 NFL season. Trumaine Johnson remains with the New York Jets after the cornerback signed a big contract with the team last year, and offensive lineman William Poehls signed a reserve/future contract with the Indianapolis Colts at the end of last season.
