Providence Argos football still a matter of ‘if’ not when

WHITEFISH — When the Frontier Conference held its annual athletic directors meeting this week, one of the main topics of discussion was the possibility of the University of Providence adding a football team.

The conference has studied scheduling options for an Argos football team, but University of Providence vice president of athletics Dave Gantt said it’s still a matter of if, not when. His primary concern is the student-athletes that are already part of UP.

“We’ll be pretty close to 350 student-athletes next year, and certainly it would be a disservice to them to move forward with anything before we take care of all them,” Gantt said. “That’s really been my challenge the last three cycles, is to make sure that we’re whole elsewhere before we go down that path. Because when we do, we want it to work well. It’s only fair to everyone that is currently there that we take care of their opportunities, as well.”
